In the heart of the Orion constellation, among clouds of gas and cosmic dust, lies one of the most iconic sights in the winter sky.
The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) emerges as a dark, dense structure, carved against the red glow of ionised hydrogen. Not far away, the Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) burns with its own light, illuminated by the intense radiation of young stars and nearby Alnitak, one of the three stars that make up Orion's belt. They are about 1,350-1,500 light years from Earth.
