Helix Nebula
Also known as “God's Eye” due to its distinctive shape, the Helix Nebula (NGC 7293) is one of the closest planetary nebulae to our planet.
It is located 650 light years from Earth in the constellation Aquarius and has a diameter of about 2.5 light years. It was discovered by Karl Ludwig Harding before 1824.
The Helix Nebula is an example of a planetary nebula formed at the end of the life of a solar-type star. The outer gaseous layers of the star ejected into space appear from our point of view as if we were looking down on a propeller. The central core of the star, destined to become a white dwarf, shines so brightly that it causes the previously ejected gas to fluoresce.
Based on its expansion speed of 31 km/s, it is estimated to be 10,600 years old.
