Eastern Veil — NGC 6992, Cygnus
NGC 6992 is the eastern portion of the Cygnus Loop, the remnant of a supernova explosion that occurred between 5,000 and 8,000 years ago. It is situated in the constellation Cygnus, at an estimated distance of around 2,400 light-years, although historical measurements have varied between approximately 1,400 and 2,600 light-years. The entire Cygnus Loop complex spans around 110 light-years and covers an area of the sky six times the size of the full Moon. In the southern part of this same complex lies NGC 6995 (IC 1340), known as the ‘Bat Nebula’ due to its shape, which resembles a bat in flight.
