Helping Hand Nebula LDN 1357
LDN 1357 forms part of a complex of dark nebulae in the constellation Cassiopeia, known as the Helping Hand Nebula, as its structure of dark dust traces the outline of an open hand in the sky that appears to reach out into the cosmos. Situated in the constellation of Cassiopeia, some 3,000 light-years away from us, this structure is not made of light, but of extremely dense, cold cosmic dust. It acts as a shield: it absorbs and blocks the light from the stars behind it, projecting this incredible silhouette into the void, which seems as though it is reaching out to us. Beneath its ‘palm’, the blue glow of the reflection nebula vdB 9 also shines.
This image is a composite of data from two different optical set-ups: last year’s data, obtained with the Askar FRA 600 refractor, and this year’s data, acquired with the Newton 200 f/4.
