The "Pillars of Creation" at the center of the Eagle Nebula (M16) visible in the constellation of Serpens. They are called this way thanks to a famous photo of the Hubble Space Telescope taken in 1995. They consist of very dense columns of gas and dust formed due to the considerable stellar wind in that H II region (7000 light years from Earth).
Studying the morphology and composition of these structures has significantly improved our knowledge of the processes of star formation.
The colors of the photo reproduce the famous Hubble palette, studied by NASA for some shots of the Hubble Space Telescope, which requires special narrow-band filters: Hydrogen (H alpha), Oxygen (OIII) and Sulfur (SII).
