The Seagull Nebula (IC2177) in the constellation Monoceros and Canis Major. This is a very large emission nebula measuring over 100 light years in diameter at a distance of 3600 light years. The nebula is made up mostly of ionized hydrogen excited by the energy of nearby giant stars. In fact the nebula contains clusters of young blue stars that cause the nebula to grow, stars that were “born” in the nebula itself. The Seagulls small head is at top left and the large wings are below. I captured this with my remote telescope in Texas over the course of 5 nights.
