The Shrimp Nebula (Sh2-188)
This is a planetary nebula visible in the constellation Cassiopeia. Due to its characteristic shape, it is nicknamed the Shrimp Nebula.
Its position can be easily found by following the chain of stars δ Cassiopeiae, χ Cassiopeiae and HD 9352; however, it is a very faint and weak object. The best time to observe it in the evening sky is between August and January, and it is much easier to see for observers in the northern hemisphere, where it is circumpolar up to the warm temperate regions.
Although it has been included in the Sharpless Catalogue, it is actually a planetary nebula, located at a distance of 711 light years from the Solar System. It appears as a well-defined shell on the eastern side and very dispersed on the western side, where it seems to have already dissolved. Its expansion velocity has been used to determine its age at approximately 7500 years. Although its appearance resembles a supernova remnant, this possibility has been ruled out due to the type of emissions it produces.
