M 106
Also known as NGC 4258, it is a spiral galaxy visible in the constellation of the Hounds. It appears to be home to a supermassive black hole in its interior, containing a mass equal to 36 million solar masses, concentrated in a volume of between 1/24 and 1/12 of a light year.
M106 was discovered by Pierre Méchain in July 1781; he described it as a nebulous object located between Ursa Major and the Venetian Dogs. Charles Messier observed this object and indicated its position, but did not include it in his famous catalogue because it had already been published; only in the 1950s was this catalogue extended. The distance to the galaxy is estimated at 21-25 million light years and it is moving away from us at a speed of 537 km/s.
Its cosmic companions NGC 4248 and NGC 4217 are visible in the image. In addition, the framed field contains numerous other distant galaxies.
